Dear
prabhus,Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and his dear devotees. Thank you so kindly for sending me the sad news. Unfortunately I have only just had my computer repaired and therefore only received your email after the day you were sharing rememberances. Perhaps you may still be able to read out, or put on a notice board, this little note from me. My great regret is that I didn't maintain communication with Somaka, as is the same with so many devotees dear to me in Italy. Now I when I reflect I can see immediately how much his company in our early days helped to form my whole attitude to Krsna Consciousness. Excuse me if some of these annecdotes may seem irreverent but they are pictures of Somaka that are in my mind today. Somaka joined the temple in Fontenay-aux-Roses together with Mrda and Swastika just a month or so before me. The other devotees had been studying Srimad Bhagavatam longer so Pusta Krsna Maharaja would give the four of us extra classes in order to catch up. This was where we began our long interest in discussing the philosophy of Krsna Consciousness and how we became friends. He was already the temple commander when I joined. Every morning he would wake the brahmacaris by chanting in their ashram with kartels. They would come hurtling downstairs to the showers to escape! After a day full of service Somaka would come into the kitchen in the evening to wash the day's pots while I was making Simplies for the Mongol Sweets. He was always kind, cheerful and valiant. He demonstrated to me what serving Radha Krsna meant, 24 hours a day. We also shared the duty of washing all the clothes for the brahmacaris and brahmacarinis. He taught me how to put them into the big sink and then trample them with my feet. We would be trampling away in a sink each of cold water and a whole ashram's clothes whilst we talked on and on about Krsna. Mrda and I sewed for Lord Jagannatha and discussed how we would go together to open a temple in Italy. She began to teach me Italian -- Krsna e' blu -- It seemed quite easy! Mrda was so young, 18, Somaka was older. After her death he honoured her memory sometimes chastising the brahmacaris with being less austere or determined than Mrda. To me they were both models of Krsna Consciousness. Both Somaka and Mrda were so dedicated to Krsna and preaching for Srila Prabhupada, often at the cost of their health and comfort. As a result they would sometimes have furious arguments. I remember one day in Paris Somaka returned from his trip to Rungis, the fruit and veg market (where he inaugurated the collection of bhoga donations). He had had an accident caused by falling asleep at the wheel, careering across two lanes of oncoming traffic and coming to a halt against a bus shelter. No one was hurt but Mrda was very angry and she lectured him for ages that evening, as he stood humbly hanging his head, that he should always remember that his body belonged to Krsna and he should never take risks that could jeopardise his service. In Piazza Lodi the scene would often be repeated. Perhaps, as usual Mrda, was finishing her rounds late at night having been busy in service since first thing in the morning, then it would be Somaka's turn chastising her, down the stair-well from the second floor, for not taking rest early enough. Their voices would ring out as we sat on the stairs drinking our milk and debating the various points of philosophy being raised. Somaka would attack, "Srila Prabhupada says..." Mrda would stand at the bottom of the stairs and would shout back her defence ... "In Nectar of Devotion it says..." Somaka would reply "Well Bhagavad Gita verse... says..." up, down, up, down; with care, with love, and hugely funny. Somaka had a drive and desire to spread Krsna Consciousness in Italy. He wasn't interested in being temple president prefering to be free to travel and preach. He was so versatile and used it all in service. Once I had to be absent for a few days and most of the other devotees were in India. I had to explain to Somaka over the phone in very poor Italian how to worship the Deities. He did arotik, led kirtan, dressed the Deities, cooked the offerings and gave class at the same time. He then sewed a beautiful outfit for Gaura Purnima. He wrote and produced terrific plays, and performed gripping monologues. He was a great builder. He made the vyasasan for Srila Prabhupada, the first of many huge constructions, including the biggest Rath cart and even Lord Jagannath Himself. When he travelled with the travelling temple he was attentive to the smallest details of comfort for Sri Sri Gaura Nitai. I remember at Mondragone getting up for mongol arotik to see Somaka still preaching to people in the piazza. He finally excused himself from this night long discussion and went to shower and wake up the Deities. He treated Krsna very personally and perhaps this is what I most learned from him and Mrda, they really saw Krsna everywhere and were prepared to love and serve Him at every moment. There was a great sense of immediacy and proximity that Krsna saw, heard and received our service. This wasn't a Krsna far away that we would join one day in the future in the spiritual sky. This was Krsna in the spiritual sky on the altar, a person, the supreme person, with us now. Love Him, serve Him, dance, chant, eat, sleep, dream for Him. One of the verses I remember sharing with Somaka was Bhagavad Gita 14/26 mam ca yo 'vyabhicarena bhakti-yogena sevate sa gunan samitityaitan brahma-bhuyaya kalpate "Coluie che s'impegna completamente nel sevizio di devozione, senza mai deviare, trascende subito le tre influenze della natura materiale e raggiunge cosi il livello del brahman." It was how he wanted to be. I think that is how he was. He always loved Krsna in his heart. Your servant Bhogini. Traduzione in Italiano da Sri Lalita Devi Dasi Cari Prabhus, Per favore accettate i miei umili omaggi. Tutte le glorie a Srila Prabhupada e i Suoi cari devoti. Sono molto dispiaciuta di non
avere mantenuto contatti con Somaka Prabhu e con altri devoti italiani
a me cari. Ora, riflettendo posso notare come la compagnia di Somaka Prabhu,
nei primi periodi della nostra vita spirituale, mi abbia aiutato a formare
completamente la mia attitudine verso la Coscienza di Krsna.
